The Great Wave was created by Hokusai Katsushika, one of the most important Japanese woodcut artists. The painting was done around 1831 as part of the "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" series.

The reverse of the coin features an image of the The Great Wave painting. The square shape of the coin and its outside rim that resembles a frame give the coin a better representation of the painting.

The obverse of the coin displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, along with the monetary denomination of the coin, 1 dollar, year of issue, 2020, and metal quality and weight.

Backed by the Niue government, this coin is crafted in .999 pure silver. It has a limited mintage of only 999 coins.
