The Maltese cross is a distinctive cross symbol formed by four “V” or arrowhead-shaped concave quadrilaterals that converge at right angles at a central vertex. The cross has two tips pointing outward symmetrically. It evolved in the 16th century from earlier forms of eight-pointed crosses. Although it is most closely associated with the Knights Hospitaller (now known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta) and, by extension, the island of Malta.
