The Maltese cross is a unique symbol consisting of four “V” or arrowhead-like indented quadrilaterals that meet at a central point, forming right angles. Symmetrically, each arm of the cross extends into two outward-facing points. This emblem, which dates back to the 16th century, is an evolution of the earlier eight-pointed crosses. It is predominantly linked with the Knights Hospitaller, also known today as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and is thus emblematic of the island of Malta itself.
