The UK-based private Pobjoy Mint has released a new Ultra High Relief and Domed coin to mark the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

Appolo 11 is the spaceflight that successfully landed two people on the moon on July 20, 1969. It launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in July 1969 and successfully landed on the moon four days after its launch.

Two American astronauts, commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, were on board the spaceship. After they touched down on the moon, Neil Armstrong took a few steps on the surface of the moon, saying his now famous words: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

The landing of the American spaceship on the moon represented a victory of the U.S. over the Soviet Union as they had been involved in a fierce space race since 1955. The American astronauts made sure to mark their footprints on the surface of the moon, leaving a special plaque stating that “Here Men From The Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon the Moon, July 1969 AD. We Came in Peace for All Mankind”.

The reverse of the new coin features the surface and tough terrain of the moon, the footprint of the astronauts and the American flag. It further shows the Appolo 11 crew batch and NASA meatball logo. The obverse of the coin displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The coin has a limited mintage of 650 coins.
