In celebration of a fascinating culture and civilization in North America, a new 2 oz fine silver coin featuring the Aztec Calendar sunstone has been released. The Aztec Calendar represents a key symbol of the Aztec civilization that flourished between c. 1345 and 1521 CE and covered approximately most of northern Mesoamerica.

An important civilization in North America before the Spanish colonization of the Americas, Mesoamerica covered central Mexico Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and northern Costa Rica.

The Aztec calendar consisted of a 365-day calendar cycle called xiuhpohualli (year count) and a 260-day ritual cycle called tonalpohualli (day count). Together these two cycles formed a 52-year century called the calendar round. The xiuhpohualli is the agricultural calendar, while the tonalpohualli is the sacred calendar.

In an intricate and beautiful design, the reverse of the new coin features an image of the Aztec Calendar sunstone with a Malachite resin insert in the center. The Aztec Calendar Stone is a depiction of four disasters which led to the demise of the four prior universes in Aztec cosmology. It also features a hieroglyphic and photographic layout of how the Aztecs used to measure time.

The obverse displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf, issue year, and the face value of the coin.

The new coin is crafted in .999 fine silver with an antique finish. It has a limited mintage of 500 coins.

This coin comes in a themed case.
