The South African Mint has released 1 oz pure silver coin featuring an elephant. This coin is the first release of the Mint's announced big five series. Earlier this year, the South African Mint has announced the launch of multi-year, fine silver, Big Five coin program to feature wildlife synonymous with Southern Africa – the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhinoceros and the Buffalo.

The obverse of the coin features a close-up of the elephant with its ears flared and trunk and tusks being the dominant feature. The obverse displays the Coat of Arms of South Africa. It also includes the inscriptions "Big Five 2019", and "South Africa".

The reverse depicts two halves of the face of an elephant. If two coins are placed next to each other, a complete portrait of the impressive face of the elephant can be seen. The reverse also shows the monetary denomination of the coin, 5 rands, and metal weight and quality.

The term big five refers to the most popular yet most dangerous African animals: The elephant, the lion, the leopard, the Rhino and the Buffalo.

This collectible coin is struck in .999 pure silver. It has a limited mintage of only 15,000 pieces.
