The official sales department of the German Federal Ministry of Finance, Verkaufsstelle für Sammlermünzen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (VfS), released this month a new commemorative silver coin to celebrate the centenary anniversary of Bauhaus. Bauhaus in German means building school. The coins were issued by the Federal Mint, Hamburg.

Bauhaus refers to a particular kind of building style and architecture. It was first introduced by architect Walter Gropius in April 1919. The Bauhaus style has become one of the most prominent modern architecture. It has had a great deal of influence on the evolution of architecture, interior design, industrial design, and graphic design.

The Bauhaus architecture design came under intense pressure during the reign of Nazi Germany and many of its schools were forced to shut down after they were accused of spreading “degenerate art” and “cosmopolitan modernism”. However, the art did not stop there as the directors and instructors of the Bauhaus schools went into exile with their architectural concept, spreading the building style to new places as far as Chicago.

The obverse of the new coin features some of the Bauhaus’s distinctive styles, with Bauhaus logo appearing on an image of Bauhaus school in Dessau. “100 JAHRE” is inscribed to the left of a staircase. The reverse of the coin shows a centrally-located eagle, with six stars on each side. BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, which translates into the Federal Republic of Germany, is written under the eagle.

The coin weighs 18 g of .925 pure silver. It comes in uncirculated and proof quality. It has a maximum mintage of 145,000.
