New Zealand National Bank has issued a new commemorative 1 oz silver coin to mark the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing by man, which is highly considered one of the greatest scientific achievements ever.

As the entire world celebrates this monumental achievement, many mints across the world race to celebrate this special anniversary their own way, which is by releasing new coins to mark the event. With this release, the New Zealand National Bank aims to reflect on New Zealanders's notable contributions to space sciences.

The reverse side of the coin depicts a view of Earth from behind the Moon. New Zealand is visible and above it hangs the Southern Cross in a nod to the four stars of New Zealand’s flag, reflecting the Kiwis' contribution to furthering out the universe knowledge and their own celebration of this achievement. The rim of the coin is designed to look like the inside of a rocket or space station window. The text on the rim of the coin and the Southern Cross raised and mirrored, and the moon has a pitted 3D-like texture. "SPACE PIONEERS" appear on top of the coin and the denomination on the bottom.

The obverse displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley The name of Her Majesty the queen, along with the issue year, and fineness of the coin are shown.

Struck in .999 pure silver, the new coin has a maximum mintage of 1500 pieces. The coin will become available in the market in May.
