This gorgeous 1 oz pure silver coin by the South African Mint features a lion. It's the second release of the Mint's announced big five series. Earlier this year, the South African Mint has announced the launch of multi-year, fine silver, Big Five coin program to feature wildlife synonymous with Southern Africa – the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhinoceros and the Buffalo.
The obverse of the coin features a close-up of the majestic head of a lion. The obverse displays the Coat of Arms of South Africa. It also includes the inscriptions "Big Five 2019", and "South Africa". The reverse depicts two halves of the face of a lion. If two coins are placed next to each other, a complete portrait of the impressive face of the lion can be seen.
The term big five refers to the most popular yet most dangerous African animals: The elephant, the lion, the leopard, the Rhino and the Buffalo.
This coin is struck in .999 pure silver. It has a limited mintage of only 15,000 pieces. This coin comes in an illustrated blister card.
