For centuries, the stoic figure of Britannia has stood as the embodiment of a nation – poised, dignified and steadfast. Known for her imposing trident, flag-emblazoned shield and the unmistakable British lion that often accompanies her, this noble figure has maintained her iconic status to this day.
Britannia was originally created as the personification of the British Isles under the Roman Empire but since then Britannia has represented the changing face of Britain and this year is no exception. In keeping with this year’s theme of ‘the spirit of innovation’, The Royal Mint is proud to unveil the latest edition of this flagship coin, which features a fresh interpretation of Britannia by the illustrator P. J. Lynch. This new depiction once again seeks to embrace, embody and empower the spirit of Britannia and the proud British nation for which she stands.
