World War I was undoubtedly one of the bloodiest and costliest wars in human history. It left millions of civilians in the European Continent killed and nations and armies in shambles.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of this bloody four-year conflict, the Australian Perth Mint has struck a beautiful 2 ounce 99.99 pure silver coin, featuring a dove, which is a universal symbol of peace.
The reverse of this coin features a dove holding a red poppy in its beak, which is another poignant symbol. First flowers to bloom in the devastated battlefields of Western Europe after the devastating war, the red poppies became universally associated with the act of remembrance. The design of this coin is immensely rich in symbolism.
The dove is designed against a background with the word peace engraved in so many different styles. “END OF WORLD WAR I” is inscribed above the dove. The reverse also shows the year 1918, when the hostilities of the First World War ended. The obverse displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the issue year, 2019, denomination, 2 dollars, and metal quality and weight.
